Socorro is one of the main islands in the Revillagigedo Archipelago, about 24 hours off shore from Baja, Mexico. It is only accessible by liveaboard for trips generally lasting 7 nights. There are 3 islands formed from volcanic rock that you will dive: Socorro, San Benedicto, and Roca Partida. All are uninhabited by people.
Socorro is the most northern point of the 'Hammerhead Triangle' between Cocos and the Galapagos. You will see countless whitetip reef sharks to start! Depending on the time of year, you will see migrating groups of whale sharks, giant mantas, schools of hammerheads, dolphins, and sometimes humpback whales, tiger sharks, or orcas.
The peak of season is from November through April, however there has been increasing pelagic activity through to June.
The liveaboards depart from Cabo, Mexico in Baja California Sur. We recommend flying into this airport at least a day before your trip starts. If you have extra time before or after your liveaboard, we recommend visiting La Paz (roughly 1.5 hours northeast) or Magdalena Bay (about 2 hours north) for day trips to see sea lions, mobula aggregations, whales, or striped marlins depending on the season.
It is recommended to have logged at least 40 dives and have your advanced certification before taking this journey, as the diving is typically at 25m depth and currents can be quite strong. Nitrox certification is also available to use nitrox onboard during the week. This is a necessity for maximizing your bottom time with the wildlife and to minimize DCS risks. Dive gear is available to rent.
