La Paz, Mexico

Where is La Paz?

La Paz is a city located on the Sea of Cortez about 2 hours northeast of Cabo. There are liveaboard trips available on the Sea of Cortez, or you can take day trips from La Paz or La Ventana, about 40 minutes south.

What will I see and when?

The Sea of Cortez is quickly becoming a hotspot for having incredible wildlife experiences! You will almost always spot pods of dolphins from your boat or panga, and for sure sea lions. There are some great dive sites off shore where you can run into mantas, schools of fish, and more. To have greater luck spotting these particular sea creatures, you're best to travel during their migration season. Note that late summer gets incredibly hot though!

  • Whale sharks from November through April.
  • Massive sea lion colony at Espiritu Santo from September through May.
  • Mobula aggregations from April-July and November-January.
  • Whales (commonly humpback, grey, sperm, and sometimes blue) from November through April.
  • Orcas are found more frequently from April through July, however they've been spotted year-round by lucky safari-goers. There are liveaboards with aerial support available to increase your chances of finding these apex predators.

How do I get there?

You can fly directly to La Paz (LAP) or into Cabo (SJD) and then take a transfer to La Paz.

What do I need to go?

Rental equipment is available for all destinations above. Additional course certifications for advanced open water diving, nitrox, and freediving are available with your tour company.
