Magdalena Bay is located in the Baja Sur Peninsula on the west coast of Mexico. It is a small fishing village around 2-3 hours driving distance from Cabo and La Paz. Boats leave from the port for a 2 hour journey into the deep blue for safaris daily around sunrise, returning at sunset.
Magdalena Bay is your destination for freediving off shore with striped blue marlins who are hunting massive bait balls during the sardine run. Also chasing these bait balls are sea lions and sometimes sharks. You could also run into different species of whales and mobula aggregations on your trip!
The sardine run is from October through December, and is the second largest in the world after South Africa. Whale season coincides starting in November, making sightings more likely.
We recommend going in November, when sightings are more consistent and active.
You will need to fly into Cabo (SJD) or La Paz (LAP) and arrange transfers in order to get to Magdalena Bay. Once there, your guide will take you 2 hours offshore to find the marlins. You can plan this by day or as a week long excursion!
Masks, snorkels, fins, wetsuits, and weights can be rented. Lunch, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages are provided each day. It is recommended to bring a jacket or sweatshirt and extra towel to keep warm with after multiple jumps in the ocean! The water isn't incredibly cold at ~27* C, however the air above water afterwards feels tat way.
