Belize

Where is Belize?

Belize is a country on the southeast border of Mexico in the Caribbean Sea. It is famed for the Great Blue Hole, however there are many other amazing specialty dives such as the Turneffe Atoll and Hol Chan Marine Park. The Belize Barrier Reef (part of the MesoAmerican Reef, second largest in the world) stretches the length of the country, so there are great local dives from San Bedro/ Ambergris Caye all the way south past Placencia.

What will I see?

The expansive reef has hundreds of dive sites with canyons, walls, and drifts available. It is very common to see large reef sharks, nurse sharks, and turtles while diving (unlike in nearby Cozumel, Mahahual, and Roatan). The main attraction is the Great Blue Hole, which reaches 40m depth and has very cool stalactites at the bottom. Visiting Lighthouse Reef afterwards is much more full of life and color!

When is the best time to go?

Belize has beautiful weather year round! That being said, peak season is November - April for tourists. Sargassum (seaweed) starts to arrive in early spring and can stay into summer, making the beaches unpleasant. Caye Caulker had considerably less than San Pedro though (with the exception of the Alaia Hotel, which has it removed).

How do I get there?

You can fly into Belize City (BZE) and then transit to the below main scuba points of interest:

  • Placencia: Arrange transit to drive about 1.5 hours south. There are also ferries here from Honduras.
  • San Pedro/ Ambergris Caye (SPR): Best location to stay when visiting Hol Chan Marine Park! If you're already in the Central America region, there are some local puddle-jumper airlines that offer flights directly to San Pedro that give beautiful views! Coming from Belize City, you will need a transport 30 minutes to the ferry port and then a 1.5 hour ferry to the island. This island is inhabited 85% by golf carts, which makes exploring really fun!
  • Caye Caulker (CUK): Best location to stay when visiting the Blue Hole and Turneffe Atoll! If you're already in the Central America region, there are some local puddle-jumper airlines that offer flights directly to Caye Caulker that give beautiful views! Coming from Belize City, you will need a transport 30 minutes to the ferry port and then a 1 hour ferry to the island. This island is is much smaller and more laidback than San Pedro. Golf carts are the top choice for transportation, however you can walk everywhere easily.
  • Great Blue Hole: You will need a dive company to take you here on a day trip (or some offer overnights). Most dive shops going to the Blue Hole are based in San Pedro and Caye Caulker, which is closer and thus cheaper but more limited in availability since it is a much smaller island with fewer companies.
  • Turneffe Atoll: This island is tiny with only a few hotels available, which can be expensive. Typically they will provide your boat ride to the atoll. If not, there are water taxis available that take about 1.5 hours. If you do not want to stay there overnight, you will need a dive company to take you here on a day trip. Most dive shops are based in San Pedro and Caye Caulker, which is closer and thus cheaper but more limited in availability since it is a much smaller island with fewer companies.

If you're already Guatemala, Honduras, or the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, we can arrange car transfers to Belize. The drive shouldn't take longer than 1-5 hours depending where you're located.

What do I need to go?

Rental equipment is available for all destinations above. Additional course certifications for advanced open water diving, and freediving are available with your dive company.
